A Saudi Arabian citizen has been arrested in Texas for allegedly seeking explosives and plotting to blow up a series of US targets, including the home of former president George W Bush, the US Justice Department said Thursday. Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, 20, was arrested Wednesday night and charged with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. He is expected to appear in a Texas court for the first time Friday morning and could face life in prison if convicted.
Both President Barack Obama and former president Bush had been alerted of the alleged plot and arrest, said White House spokesman Jay Carney. The case ‘underscores the necessity of remaining vigilant against terrorism here and abroad,’ Carney said.
Aldawsari had been in Texas on a student visa and enrolled in university since 2008, but had been plotting a terrorist attack in the United States for years, the Justice Department said, citing a diary obtained by police from his home. Aldawsari had allegedly emailed himself a series of possible targets, including nuclear power plants. An email from this month was titled ‘Tyrant’s House’ and listed the address of former president Bush’s home in Dallas.
Late last year Aldawsari allegedly began researching and emailing himself instructions on how to build explosives. The Justice Department said from December to January he purchased nitric and sulfuric acids, a Hazmat suit, gas mask and other items. He was reported to the authorities by a chemical supplier from which he tried to buy phenol, used to make the explosive trinitrophenol.
‘As alleged in the complaint, Aldawsari purchased ingredients to construct an explosive device and was actively researching potential targets in the United States,’ said assistant attorney general David Kris in a statement.
